NOVEMBER 14-17 & 21-24 – THE GLASS HOUSE – Sarah Maxfield presents two installations as part of her Nonlinear Lineage project, an oral history and ephemera archive of experimental dance and performance in New York City.
The first installation (We deserve each other, No.2) is a constellation of ephemera from the growing Nonlinear Lineage archive. The material presented includes programs, postcards, costume elements, and other items from the collections of numerous artistic contributors to the project.
The second installation (Analog Wall Post) is an interactive collection point, created in collaboration with Brad Kisicki, designed to gather further data for an artist-driven picture of our shared history.
We deserve each other, No.2 is on view at The Invisible Dog’s Glass House from November 14th through 24th: Thursdays – Saturdays from 1-7, and Sundays from 1-5. A reception will be held on Sunday, November 17th.
Analog Wall Post is open for interaction during the Brooklyn Commune Global Congress on Friday, November 22nd from 6-7, Saturday, November 23rd from 1-7, and Sunday, November 24th from 1-5.
Nonlinear Lineage is organized by Sarah Maxfield in collaboration with Elliott Jenetopulos. Advisors to the project currently include artists/educators Lenora Champagne and Holly Hughes, as well as Susan Kraft, Coordinator of the Oral History Archive and Project at the Jerome Robbins Dance Division of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.
Sarah Maxfield investigates contemporary performance and its history through practice, discussion, and critical theory. She creates live performance and, with equal focus, creates structures for viewing and discussing performance and its context. Maxfield’s work has been presented by The Chocolate Factory Theater, P.S. 122, and the Museum of Arts and Design, among other venues in NYC and beyond. Maxfield has contributed writing to The Brooklyn Rail, The Performance Club, and the Movement Research Performance Journal, and she was a Context Notes Writer for Dance Theater Workshop’s final season. Maxfield currently serves on the New York Dance and Performance “Bessies” Awards committee, curates two ongoing series (THROW and One-Shot), and is a co-producer of the WestFest Dance Festival. She is also developing a festival to honor the work of performance artist Tom Murrin and conducting an oral history of experimental dance and performance in New York, titled Nonlinear Lineage. She is currently a fellow at Abrons Arts Center at Henry Street Settlement.
