The Invisible Dog and Prelude Festival are thrilled to present The Anthropologists' axes, herbs and satchels .
The annual PRELUDE festival is dedicated to artists at the forefront of contemporary New York City theatre, dance, interdisciplinary and mediatized performance. PRELUDE offers an array of short performances, readings, and screenings — a completely free survey of the current New York moment and the work being prepared for the next season and beyond—as well as new commissions and panel discussions with artists, scholars, and performers. PRELUDE is a place to discover what voices are shaping the future of theatre and performance in NYC, to observe, engage, commune, and critique.

Rooted in the history and embodied wisdom of doulas and midwives, "axes, herbs and satchels" is a celebration of traditional knowledge held in the Black birth worker community and a potent examination of maternal mortality. The Anthropologists' axes, herbs and satchels offers midwifery as a gift to humanity and doulas as resistance.

About The Anthropologists: The Anthropologists is dedicated to the collaborative creation of investigative theatre that inspires action. Fusing research, expressive movement, and rigorous dramaturgy, we create dynamic plays rooted in social inquiry. They use theatre to engage with challenging questions, to re-contextualize the present and reimagine our collective future.
They create original, ensemble-devised theatre using improvisation, composition and highly stylized movement inspired by found text, source material and artifacts (paintings, songs, poems, etc.) and guided by rigorous dramaturgy. They utilize a protracted development process marked by several opportunities for work-in-progress showings or performances. This allows us to fully develop their work and achieve artistic excellence while nurturing intimate community and audience relationships. Their movement-based training is inspired by Viewpoints, Biomechanics, Tectonic Theatre Company, Liz Lerman and Doug Varone along with other techniques and visionary teachers.
