Dear Friends,
It's Monday, and Memorial Day in the United States.
Talking about memory is talking about the past, the present and the future.
I don't want to talk about the future, there is enough about it everywhere: new world, new age, new intentionality, new beginning, new normal, brand new, new New-York, new futures, and even the old Roosevelt's new deal.
Same for the present, it's everywhere, I will spare you the uncertain, unstable, unprecedented usual newsletters vocabulary.
No other choice than talking about the past, the one (still) in everyone's memory.
And who's better than Georges Perec* (and some friends) to inspire me:
I remember licking the phone screen to clean it.
I remember having excuses to not attend an event.
I remember eating a birthday cake right after someone blew the candles.
I remember going to the office.
I remember resting my head on a pole in the subway on my way back home.
I remember Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and the other days of the week.
I remember that the first rows at the Met Opera were the most expensive seats.
I remember dinners with friends at Katz on Saturday night.
I remember the Cock and the bouncer loudly warning "Watch your wallet".
I remember Steven and William's endless hugs.
I remember French kissing with strangers.
I remember, I remember, I remember...
Coronarely yours,
Lucien Zayan

*Georges Perec (1936-1982) was a French novelist. He was a member of the Oulipo group. Many of his works deal with absence, loss, and identity, often through word play. Perec's "Je me souviens" was inspired by Joe Brainard's "I Remember"
